Karl Walther

Karl is a pharmacist by training. He completed his German state examination (Staatsexamen) and earned his Diploma degree at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena in 2025. His previous research focused on biomaterials, based on bacterial nanocellulose and silk fibroin, as well as pharmaceutical microbiology, with a deeper focus on terpenoids and alkaloids derived from fungi of the genus Psilocybe. Currently, his project investigates extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from intestinal nematodes, exploring their anti-inflammatory properties and how their targeted release influences their efficacy. To achieve this, he is developing a novel, eco-friendly EV platform that can be programmed for site-specific EV release.

Outside the lab, you will most likely find Karl cycling, running, or enjoying the great outdoors around Erlangen.
